Signs
Kress mentions that the relation between signifier and signified is always motivated and not arbitrary as what Saussure perceived it to be. I have asked my daughter who is turning three this April to draw for me a car. Below is what she drew.
Kress mentions that the relation between signifier and signified is always motivated and not arbitrary as what Saussure perceived it to be. I have asked my daughter who is turning three this April to draw for me a car. Below is what she drew.
She explained that the 4 circles are wheels and the 2 lines is the door to the car. According to her, the shapes drawn are a representation of a car – 4 wheels and 2 doors. The reasons for her to choose to draw the wheels and doors are probably due to the fact that she loves to open and close the door of a car and also she likes to draw circles. And Kress further states that the signifier chosen will be apt for the signified and that from the shape of the signifier the reader will form hypothesis about the sign as a whole.

Hi Nazeha,
This is a masterpiece by your daughter. I have noticed that she can draw very well. Take a look at horizontal lines that she has drawn. They are pretty straight. In my opinion, the fine motor skill is well-developed for a child who is only two year and nine months old.
She has made the choice of drawing four circles(wheels) and two lines(doors) to represent a car.
What is the semiotic potential in this particular artefact?
Perhaps, she is try to draw a flashy sports car with two doors.
Do you know which birthday present to buy for her now?
Hey Bee Bee,
I believe one of the main reasons for her to draw the wheels to represent the car is because drawing circles is something she likes to do. And maybe it's a coincidence that a car has wheels and since it's a round shape, she has convieniently chose circles to represent it. Maybe i should ask her to draw something else and see how she represent it with...
